A glorious sharp, crisp winter day for examining the array of early bulbs and perennials offered by our favourite garden centre, Golden Days, here in Manchester, near the river Mersey between East Didsbury and Cheadle which is just into Cheshire. Golden Days (such a exuberant name) are not nursery-men, but they keep their botanical stock in fine fettle, properly labelled. They have a gift section and in early January, it is sensible to shift the excess unsold Christmas stock at customer-friendly prices rather than warehouse it for next time.
We know they offer these “Racke-Nackes” (our version of ersatz German) in different sizes. A house near our son’s in Eltham, London SE9, has two of the largest, 150cm high, outside their front porch, and presumable cemented to the ground, to deter thieves.
